Codessos

Nestled in the heart of Paços de Ferreira lies the charming village of Codessos. A place seemingly untouched by time, Codessos whispers tales of a rich past. Codessos was once a vibrant parish, bustling with life and activity. It boasted a population of 1,011 inhabitants in 2011. Codessos covered an area of 2.10 square kilometers. Imagine strolling through the quaint streets, each one a thread in the tapestry of this historical gem. Codessos was more than just houses and streets. It was a community woven together by shared traditions and a deep sense of belonging. The village was composed of various distinct areas: Boavista, Cruz, Descida, Devesa, Monte, Outeiro, Palhais, Paredes, Aredinhas, Rego, Ribeira, São João da Torre, Torrinha, and Zonha. Each area likely held its own unique character and stories, adding to the rich tapestry of Codessos. The heart of Codessos beat within the walls of its church, dedicated to São João Baptista. The patron saint served as a spiritual anchor for the community, guiding their celebrations and offering solace in times of need. The history of Codessos is marked by a period of annexation. Between March 26, 1896, and November 23, 1956, Codessos was joined with the parish of Lamoso. Later, it regained its independence, standing once again as a testament to its resilience and enduring spirit. A notable landmark in Codessos is the Capela do Socorro. Situated on Monte do Socorro, this chapel offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Ave Valley. This special place serves not only as a site of spiritual significance but also as a reminder of Codessos’s unique geographical setting. In 2013, as part of a national administrative reform, Codessos merged with the parishes of Sanfins and Lamoso. This union created a new parish known as Sanfins Lamoso Codessos. Though the village of Codessos may have lost its official status as an independent parish, its spirit and history live on.
