This hill played a significant role during the American Revolutionary War. It was fortified as “Cobble Hill Fort”. This fort provided a strategic vantage point during the Battle of Brooklyn. The British however leveled the fort after their victory. The British also occupied Philip Livingston’s estate using it as a naval hospital.

The 19th century brought remarkable changes to Cobble Hill. It transitioned from farmland to a thriving residential area. Wealthy families built grand brownstones and townhouses. The development was spurred by the establishment of a ferry service in 1836. This connected Atlantic Avenue to Manhattan’s Whitehall Street. The gridiron street pattern that we see today was established around 1834. This period saw architectural styles flourish. Greek Revival Gothic Revival Italianate and Romanesque Revival styles shaped the neighborhood’s character. Famous architects like Richard Upjohn contributed to this architectural legacy. He designed Christ Church. Minard Lafever also designed the Strong Place Baptist Church.

Cobble Hill’s story isn’t just about grand architecture. It’s also about community. The Cobble Hill Association played a crucial role in preserving the neighborhood’s unique identity. They fought against large housing projects. They also transformed the site of abandoned mansions and a church into Cobble Hill Park. This park a small yet picturesque green space offers respite amidst the urban landscape. The Association continues to actively protect and enhance the quality of life in Cobble Hill.
