Coast General Morgue.

In 1981, a new chapter began for Coast General Morgue. The Kenyan government added a new wing to the Coast Province General Hospital. This expansion included critical departments. One of them was, of course, the mortuary, now known as the Coast General Morgue. This addition significantly enhanced the hospital’s capacity to serve the growing population of Mombasa and the surrounding Coast Province. The morgue, equipped with modern refrigeration units and a standby generator, became an essential part of the hospital’s operation. Between 1998 and 2000, the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) invested heavily in the hospital’s infrastructure. This investment included renovations and expansions at Coast General Morgue, modernizing the facility and further solidifying its role in the region. These improvements, along with the hospital’s 700-bed capacity, make Coast General Hospital, including its morgue, the second largest public hospital in Kenya, second only to Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi. It serves a primary population of over 700,000 and a secondary population of around 2 million. The Coast General Morgue, though a solemn place, represents a vital component of a crucial institution providing healthcare to a vast region.
