Floating high above us, seemingly weightless, are the Cloudscape sculptures. These aren’t just any clouds. These are Christopher Lavery’s artistic interpretation of Colorado’s expansive sky.

Cloudscape, originally gracing Pena Boulevard near Denver International Airport, now welcomes visitors to the Children’s Museum of Denver. Imagine driving by, your eyes drawn to these puffy white clouds. They offer a moment of curiosity and imagination.

Christopher Lavery created Cloudscape in 2010. He wanted to project a positive image of Colorado. The vast sky, magnificent mountains, and colorful sunsets inspired him.

The Cloudscape sculptures sit atop blue steel towers. These towers resemble oil well towers and utility towers found across rural Colorado. Lavery sought to blend the natural with the industrial.

At night, Cloudscape transforms. LED panels illuminate the clouds from within. The colors shift mimicking Colorado sunrises and sunsets. It is a magical display that captures the spirit of Colorful Colorado.

Cloudscape comprises three distinct cloud sculptures. The largest was the last to be installed at the Children’s Museum. A crane carefully lifted it into place.

These clouds are made of cellular plastic, corrugated sheet metal, and painted steel. A solar power system powers the lights. This makes Cloudscape an environmentally conscious artwork.

The artist considered the artwork’s impact from a distance. He also designed it to be appreciated up close. Cloudscape offers different experiences depending on your perspective.

Denver Arts and Venues partnered to relocate Cloudscape. The sculpture now delights children and adults alike. It sparks imagination and wonder.

People describe Cloudscape as photogenic, a hidden gem, and family-friendly. It’s also considered interactive and thought-provoking. This public sculpture clearly resonates with many.

Cloudscape is more than just art. It is a symbol of Colorado’s beauty and ingenuity. It is an off-the-grid functioning electrical system. The project exemplifies how public art can be both beautiful and sustainable.

Ninety percent of Cloudscape’s budget went to local companies. This supported the local economy during its creation. It is a testament to Denver’s commitment to its artists and community. So, as you gaze upon Cloudscape, remember it’s a story of art, environment, and community woven together.
