Is it just me, or does this barrier seem a little out of place? We’re standing here, at the entrance to what used to be a bustling hub of Boracay, the Closed gate. Boracay, as you know, was once a shining jewel of the Philippines, famed for its pristine white beaches and crystal clear waters. However, the years of unchecked tourism took a toll. By 2018, the island was struggling with severe environmental damage. The president at the time, Rodrigo Duterte, even called it a “cesspool”. Imagine that, a paradise turned into a cesspool! The situation was dire with sewage flowing directly into the ocean and mountains of plastic waste piling up. Duterte made a bold decision. He ordered the closure of Boracay to tourists for a period of six months. That’s right, the entire island was shut down. This Closed gate, which probably seems insignificant now, was a symbol of that drastic measure. It marked a turning point, a commitment to prioritize the environment and ensure the sustainability of this beautiful island for generations to come.
