Tucked away in the Samford Valley lies Closeburn. It’s a quiet, rural locality, a blend of acreage properties and small farms about 28 kilometers northwest of Brisbane. Closeburn is a place where time seems to slow down. The air is fresh, and the sounds of the city fade into the gentle rustling of leaves. Closeburn wasn’t always called Closeburn. It was originally known as Cedar Creek, named after the waterway that meanders through the area. The name Closeburn actually comes from the local railway station. The Queensland Railways Department named the station on February 4, 1901, reportedly after a town in Scotland. So, next time you’re at the Closeburn station, take a moment to appreciate its Scottish namesake. Closeburn has a rich history, evident in landmarks like the Cedar Creek Public Hall. This hall, opened in 1925, serves as a community hub and houses the Closeburn Honour Roll for World War II. It’s a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the community. Another significant landmark is Sydney Cartwright Park. This park holds a memorial to soldier Sydney Allan Cartwright, who tragically died as a prisoner of war in Siam during World War II. Closeburn may be a small locality, but it boasts some interesting facilities. There’s a Telstra exchange, providing residents with ADSL and ADSL2+ internet access. The Closeburn Rural Fire Brigade station stands ready to protect the community. In the heart of Closeburn, you’ll find the Cedar Creek Public Hall at 2 Andrew Road, the rural fire brigade just down the road at number 8, and Sydney Cartwright Park nearby. Although Closeburn doesn’t have its own schools, the neighboring communities offer educational options. Mount Samson State School and Samford State School serve as the nearest primary schools, while Ferny Grove State High School caters to secondary students. Closeburn is a hidden gem in the Moreton Bay Region. It offers a peaceful escape from the city while still being close enough to enjoy its amenities. As you explore Closeburn, take a moment to appreciate its history, its community spirit, and its tranquil beauty.
