Journey back to 1900. Here in Clontarf West Ward 1900, Dublin is undergoing a transformation. The Dublin Corporation Act of 1900 reshaped the city’s boundaries. Clontarf, previously governed by its own township, was incorporated into Dublin.

Imagine horse-drawn trams clip-clopping along the coast. Wealthy Dubliners flocked here for seaside holidays. Clontarf was becoming a fashionable suburb.

The Clontarf Township Act of 1869 had established town commissioners. They oversaw local affairs. The commissioners even commissioned Clontarf Town Hall. It stands today as St Anthony’s Hall, completed in 1896.

Before 1900, Clontarf was part of the Barony of Coolock. It was governed by town commissioners. The urban district status was short-lived. The Dublin Corporation Act of 1900 abolished it. Clontarf became part of Dublin City.

Clontarf’s history stretches back much further. The Battle of Clontarf in 1014 marked a turning point. Brian Boru, the High King of Ireland, defeated the Vikings. This defined Clontarf’s place in Irish history.

The name Clontarf itself has ancient roots. It comes from “Cluain Tarbh,” meaning “meadow of bulls.” Some say the name refers to the sound of waves. They crashed against the shore sounding like bellowing bulls.

The Vernon family played a prominent role in Clontarf’s history. They occupied Clontarf Castle for nearly 350 years. The castle has earlier origins. Adam de Pheypo, a Norman follower of Strongbow, built the first Clontarf Castle in 1172.

Religious life thrived in Clontarf. The Church of Ireland, Presbyterian, and Methodist congregations all had churches here. The Catholic Church of St Anthony was built behind the old St Anthony’s Church. This older building once served as Clontarf Town Hall.

In 1900, Clontarf was a mix of seaside resort and growing suburb. Dairy farms dotted the landscape towards Killester. The Incorporated Orthopaedic Hospital of Ireland opened in Blackheath in 1876.

The seafront became a popular amenity. People strolled along the promenade. From 1911 to 1958, Dublin Corporation added shelters and lifeguard stations. These additions improved the visitor experience.

Clontarf also boasts a rich sporting heritage. Clontarf Yacht and Boat Club was founded in 1875. Various sports clubs contribute to the community’s vibrant life.

Even today, Clontarf maintains its unique character. It blends historical significance with modern life. As you stand here in Clontarf West Ward 1900, remember its transition. Clontarf embraced becoming part of Dublin. It was a step into a new century.
