Did you know that Charles Stewart Parnell, a famous Irish politician, held his second-to-last public meeting right here at Clonkeen College? This grand secondary school for boys has a rich history woven into the fabric of Blackrock, Dublin. Built on the grounds where Parnell addressed the people, Clonkeen College began as St Joseph’s Private Preparatory School back in 1965. It was a small school, run by just three Christian Brothers. The primary school closed in 1975, while the secondary school which started as St. Joseph’s, was renamed Clonkeen College. The current building welcomed its first students in 1970. It was quite a small group, comprised of one fifth-year class and two third-year classes. In fact, only thirteen students earned their Leaving Certificate in the first year. Even with its humble beginnings, Clonkeen rapidly flourished, becoming a respected institution in the community and beyond. Standing right in front of the building, imagining its past, it is easy to imagine the echo of Parnell’s voice resonating through the neighborhood. It’s a privilege to be here, walking these grounds, where history comes to life. The school has since grown tremendously, with students now thriving in a wide range of academic programs. Today, you can find the school offering a robust selection of subjects, from the traditional trinity of Irish, English, and Maths to more specialized areas like Business, Economics, and even Music. The College boasts modern facilities like state-of-the-art science labs, a spacious sports hall, and even an art room. But it’s the school’s dedication to its students and its community that truly makes it special. Clonkeen College, a place where students learn not only from books but also from life’s experiences.
