Baron Peter Clodt von Jurgensburg, a man with a passion for horses, breathed life into bronze. His magnificent Clodt’s Horse statues command attention on Saint Petersburg’s Anichkov Bridge. These aren’t just statues. They’re a narrative frozen in time. Clodt’s Horse statues capture the dynamic struggle between man and beast. They depict the gradual taming of a wild horse. The bridge, carrying Nevsky Prospekt over the Fontanka River, provides a majestic stage for this bronze ballet. Clodt, a favorite of Emperor Nicholas I, originally crafted two statues, “Horse with Walking Youth” and “Youth Taking a Horse by the Bridle”. These were intended for the Academy of Fine Arts. Fate, however, had other plans. Ancient Egyptian Sphinxes arrived in St. Petersburg. They took the intended spot. Clodt’s Horses found their home on Anichkov Bridge. The sculptures were so admired that copies were gifted to King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia and King Ferdinand II of Sicily. You can still admire one of these copies in front of the Royal Palace in Naples. For a time, only plaster copies graced Anichkov Bridge. This changed in 1851. Four bronze castings, including two new statues, were installed. An interesting detail is that all four statues are modeled on the same Arabian stallion, Amalatbek. Clodt’s daughter played a key role. She coaxed the horse to prance while her father sketched. Clodt’s Horses have witnessed history. They were twice removed from their pedestals. The first time was during the Siege of Leningrad. This was to protect them from war damage. The second removal was in 2000 for restoration before St. Petersburg’s tercentenary celebrations. Clodt’s Horses stand as enduring symbols of artistry. They reflect the deep connection between man and horse. As you gaze upon them, imagine the stallion’s powerful muscles, the groom’s determined grip. Hear the echoing hooves, the hushed whispers of the crowd. Clodt’s Horses are more than just bronze. They are a story whispered on the wind, a testament to the enduring power of art.
