Clinton Hill. A name that whispers of history. It’s a neighborhood in north-central Brooklyn. Its story begins in the 1640s with Dutch colonists. They planted tobacco near Wallabout Bay. The area’s highest point reaches 95 feet. That’s quite impressive for Brooklyn. People believed the hill offered health benefits. They thought diseases were worse in low-lying areas.

The name comes from Clinton Avenue. It’s named after DeWitt Clinton a New York governor. He lived from 1769 to 1828. DeKalb Avenue is the main thoroughfare. Clinton Hill boasts a mix of apartment buildings and grand mansions. You’ll also find charming brownstones and brick row houses. The Pratt Institute and St. Joseph’s College add to its unique charm.

The British army marched through here on August 27 1776. They used the Road to Jamaica which was near Atlantic Avenue. Their surprise attack forced the American army to retreat. After the war the Dutch continued to build. Their homes offered stunning views of the East River and Manhattan.

By the 1840s Clinton Hill and nearby Fort Greene became fashionable. Wealthy Brooklynites lived there. They commuted to Manhattan by stagecoach to the Fulton Ferry. Walt Whitman even lived here briefly in 1855. He lived at 99 Ryerson Street. That’s where he worked on Leaves of Grass.

Charles Pratt an oil executive built a mansion. It’s at 232 Clinton Avenue. It’s now part of St. Joseph’s College. He built houses for his sons too giving them as wedding gifts. This attracted more wealthy people. Clinton Hill became known as Brooklyn’s Gold Coast. Pratt also founded the Pratt Institute in 1887. Its campus remains a key part of Clinton Hill.

The Brooklyn Flatbush and Coney Island Railway served Clinton Hill. Families used it for day trips to Brighton Beach. They’d return home at a reasonable hour. Some families even spent summers at the Brighton Beach Hotel. This hotel was owned by the same people who built the railroad.

By the 1900s apartment buildings replaced mansions. Some mansions became rooming houses. Robert Moses’s urban renewal projects impacted the area. Five blocks south of the Pratt Institute were cleared. Brownstones were lost. The 1970s saw a brownstone revival. Many were restored. The 2000s brought gentrification. Wealthier people moved in. A passive house apartment building was even built at 283 Greene Avenue.

Clinton Hill is more than just beautiful buildings. It’s a vibrant community. It’s home to artists architects photographers and craftspeople. It’s a place where history art and modern life intertwine. A place where stories unfold on every street corner. A place you won’t soon forget. Clinton Hill awaits.
