Right here, on Lambert Road, stands Clifton Preparatory School, a Durban institution with a rich history dating back to 1924. Founded by Harry Stubbs, the retired headmaster of Durban Prep, Clifton Preparatory School began its journey in a rather unconventional setting: Stubbs’ own home. Originally named “Stubbs’ School for Boys”, it was Stubbs’ daughter, Dorothy, who suggested the name “Clifton” in memory of her cousin, Clifford Plimsoll. Clifford tragically passed away during the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1919. The early years of Clifton Preparatory School were marked by a spirit of resourcefulness. With no sports fields on the property, cricket and rugby matches were held at the nearby Old Fort grounds, athletics at Mitchell Park, and swimming at the Town or Beach Baths. Over the years, Clifton Preparatory School has grown from its humble beginnings into a renowned institution, expanding its campus and facilities through the acquisition of neighboring properties. Today, Clifton Preparatory School stands as a testament to the vision of its founders and the dedication of countless individuals who have walked its halls. It continues to nurture young minds, foster a love for learning, and uphold the values of trust, confidence, and mutual respect.
