Was it destiny or simple chance that shaped Clifton? Clifton, Massachusetts. It was once envisioned as a grand resort. Now, let’s uncover its story.

Clifton’s tale begins with Benjamin Ware. He was a hotelier with a vision. Ware aimed to create a resort area. His Clifton House was considered one of the finest lodgings. This was in Essex County.

In 1884, Ware dreamed bigger. He sought to unite Marblehead Neck’s southeastern coastline with his resort community. He wanted to form the Town of Clifton Village. However, the Committee on Towns denied his proposal. Thus, Clifton remained a street car stop.

Despite Ware’s grand plans, Clifton never became a formal village. Locals don’t recognize it as such. Yet, the name stuck. It identifies a specific area within Swampscott and Marblehead. Clifton Avenue marks part of its boundaries.

Clifton’s story includes significant events beyond resorts. In 1908, the Clifton Conference convened. It addressed the education of African Americans. This meeting took place at William N. Hartshorn’s home. Hartshorn was a Baptist leader who spent summers in Clifton.

Transportation played a role in Clifton’s development. The Boston & Maine Railroad had a station here. This was in the 1920s. Today, the old track bed is a bike path. It stretches from Swampscott to Salem.

Though Clifton doesn’t officially exist, several neighborhoods claim its name. These include Greystone, Clifton Heights, and Rockaway. Clifton Improvement Association and Clifton Heights Improvement Association work to enhance these areas.

Now, let’s jump to a completely different Clifton. This Cliftondale is in Saugus. It has a distinct character. This Cliftondale boasts historic homes. Many date back to 1939 or earlier. Small apartment buildings dominate the landscape here. In fact, 31.3% of real estate are small apartments.

Cliftondale also has a diverse population. A notable percentage of residents have Brazilian and Romanian ancestry. Portuguese is spoken in some homes. The neighborhood is upper-middle income. A significant portion of residents work in executive, management, and professional occupations.

Interestingly, another notable person shares the name Clifton. Connor Clifton is a professional ice hockey defenseman. He currently plays for the Buffalo Sabres. He once played for the Boston Bruins.

So, two separate places and a hockey player share the name Clifton. One is a would-be resort turned streetcar stop. The other is a vibrant neighborhood with a rich history. Both contribute to the multifaceted tapestry of Massachusetts. As we move on, remember that names hold stories. Sometimes, they lead to unexpected connections.
