Deep in the heart of Pierce College’s Cleveland Park, an unusual sight awaits. Here at Old Trapper’s Lodge, time seems to twist and turn, taking us back to the myths and legends of the Old West. Old Trapper’s Lodge isn’t a typical lodge. It’s a unique collection of life-sized sculptures, a quirky monument to a bygone era. Created by John Ehn, a self-taught artist with a passion for the Wild West, Old Trapper’s Lodge came to life between 1951 and 1981. Ehn wasn’t a trained sculptor. He poured his love for the Old West into these figures, using his own family as models. The result is a whimsical and sometimes controversial display of cowboys, Native Americans, saloon girls, and other iconic characters. Originally located at Ehn’s motel in Sun Valley, Old Trapper’s Lodge faced an uncertain future when the land was purchased for airport expansion. Thankfully, it found a new home here in Cleveland Park in 1988. Look closely at the sculptures. You’ll see the rough edges and bold colors of folk art. These aren’t polished museum pieces. They’re a raw expression of Ehn’s vision, a testament to his unique talent. Old Trapper’s Lodge is more than just a collection of statues. It’s a time capsule, a glimpse into one man’s imagination. It’s a reminder of the enduring power of folk art and the stories it tells. As you wander through Cleveland Park, take a moment to appreciate the unique charm of Old Trapper’s Lodge. Let your imagination run wild. Imagine the stories behind these weathered faces, and let the spirit of the Old West come alive.
