Ever wondered about the secrets hidden beneath the placid waters of Clay Pit Pond? This seemingly ordinary pond in Belmont Massachusetts holds a surprisingly rich history. It’s more than just a pretty place to admire. Clay Pit Pond is a testament to human ingenuity and the ever-changing landscape of this area.

Before it was a pond Clay Pit Pond was a bustling brickyard. The Parry brothers started this operation in 1888. They dug deep into the earth extracting clay to fuel their booming brick-making business. For nearly 40 years the site produced millions of bricks. The New England Brick Company even took over increasing production to an astonishing 15 million bricks annually. Imagine the sheer scale of this operation. The workforce reached 75 men. They lived in a large brick boarding house right there on the site.

But even industrial giants cannot defy nature. By 1926 the highest quality clay was depleted. The brickyard shut down leaving behind an 1884 Marion steam shovel at the bottom of the pit. This relic lies submerged a silent testament to a bygone era.

The town of Belmont purchased the abandoned pit in 1927. Their initial plan was to use it as a waste dump. This changed in 1933. They had a better idea. The town diverted the Wellington Brook. This flooded the pit creating Clay Pit Pond. 80 million gallons of water transformed the site into an integral part of Belmont’s drainage system.

The pond isn’t just a historical site. It’s a thriving ecosystem. Bluegill common carp and largemouth bass call Clay Pit Pond home. However the pond’s history isn’t without its environmental challenges. In 2010 heavy rains caused the pond to overflow closing the nearby high school. And in 2020 the illegal removal of trees and shrubs raised serious environmental concerns.

Today Clay Pit Pond stands as a reminder of Belmont’s industrial past and its ongoing efforts to balance development with environmental stewardship. It’s a serene spot full of life. It whispers tales of hardworking men industrial enterprise and the remarkable resilience of nature. It shows how a former eyesore transformed into a valuable asset. This makes Clay Pit Pond a place to reflect and appreciate the intricate relationship between history nature and community.
