Right here at the Clarendon Laboratory Blue plaque, we stand before a testament to scientific history. The Clarendon Laboratory is not just a building. It’s a landmark where groundbreaking discoveries reshaped our understanding of the physical world.
The Clarendon Laboratory, a part of Oxford University’s Department of Physics, houses the atomic and laser physics groups. Condensed matter physics and biophysics groups also reside here. However, not all Oxford Physics groups call this place home. The Oxford Centre for Quantum Computation is here too.
The Clarendon Laboratory comprises the Lindemann Building and the Townsend Building. The Townsend Building is a Grade II listed structure. Adjacent to the Lindemann Building stands the Beecroft Building. It was completed in 2018.
Let’s journey back to when the Clarendon Laboratory first emerged. It’s named after Edward Hyde, the 1st Earl of Clarendon. His trustees provided funds for the original laboratory. Completed in 1872, it became England’s oldest purpose-built physics lab. Robert Bellamy Clifton designed it.
Imagine the year 1935. Fritz and Heinz London were working within these walls. They developed the London equations here. These equations are fundamental to understanding superconductivity.
Fast forward to 2007. The Clarendon Laboratory received Chemical Landmark status. This honor recognizes Henry Gwyn Jeffreys Moseley’s work in 1914. Moseley studied the frequencies of X-rays emitted by elements. His work established the concept of atomic number. It revealed the structure of the atom. He predicted new elements. He laid the groundwork for chemical analysis.
Today, the original building is part of Oxford’s Earth Sciences Department. The Oxford Electric Bell apparatus, also known as the Clarendon Dry Pile, is in the foyer. Constructed in 1840, it continues to operate.
Consider accessibility as you enter the Clarendon Laboratory. The main entrance to the Beecroft Building offers level access and a powered door. Lifts provide access to the first and second floors. A wheelchair-accessible toilet is available on the ground floor.
The Martin Wood Lecture Theatre can be accessed from within the Clarendon Laboratory. It also has a separate entrance. A ramp and steps lead to the lecture theatre entrance.
