“Can you believe this church started in a school auditorium?” Clairmont Presbyterian Church stands before you as a testament to the power of faith and community. Back in 1952, this congregation didn’t have its own building. They held their first services in the W.D. Thomson School auditorium. But their commitment was strong. They called Rev. Max Milligan as their first pastor in 1953 and began to grow. Clairmont Presbyterian Church always wanted to be a place for everyone. In 1956, they opened a kindergarten. It welcomed all children, regardless of race or creed, a truly forward-thinking act for the time. Over the years, this church has seen the construction of the Family Life Center and Milligan Hall. These buildings host everything from basketball leagues and youth groups to Sunday School and fellowship events. Clairmont Presbyterian Church also has a deep commitment to missions, both locally and internationally. Their work has taken them to Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, Honduras, Jamaica, and even Egypt. They haven’t forgotten their own community though. Their Azalea Village Ministry, founded in 2005, partners with local and national organizations to provide housing for those in need. Refugees, seminary students, families struggling with homelessness, and non-profit workers have all found a home thanks to Clairmont Presbyterian Church. Dr. Milligan’s words from 1955 still resonate today: “Someone has dreamed a wonderful dream which, under the power of God’s Spirit, has become a reality in Clairmont Presbyterian Church.” As you stand here, take a moment to appreciate the legacy of faith, service, and community that continues to thrive within these walls.
