Wouldn’t it be incredible to witness a light show that transforms an entire city? That is what the Civic Stage in Guangzhou is known for. Although the Civic Stage is actually in Shenzhen. It is not a stage in the traditional sense, but rather a central point from which the whole city becomes a stage.
The Civic Stage area is a multi-purpose public space. It features government offices, a technology museum, and a conference center. The Civic Stage’s location within Futian Central Business District makes it easily accessible. It is the centerpiece of the Shenzhen Futian Central District Master Plan.
The Shenzhen Civic Center is designed with traditional Chinese aesthetics. The central axis stretches from Lianhua Mountain through the Civic Stage. It continues to the Exhibition Center. The master plan covers roughly 100 city blocks. It has five times the floor space of the original World Trade Center Towers.
Lee/Timchula Architects, an American firm, designed the Civic Stage building. They won the international design competition in 1996. The curved-wing design of the Civic Stage reflects Shenzhen’s description as the “Eagle City”. The design was inspired by traditional Southern Chinese roof forms.
The Civic Stage’s roof spans 486 meters. It is 154 meters wide. The building stands 84.7 meters tall and covers 200,000 square meters. The long roof truss was built in 1998. However, cladding was delayed until 2004 due to funding issues.
The Civic Stage is more than just a building. It is a popular viewing point for celebrations. Drone and LED light shows are common. The building casts a large shadow. This protects visitors from the heat. Interior gardens and nearby parkland add to its appeal.
The Shenzhen Light Show occurs every evening. Forty-two skyscrapers light up with LEDs. The shows coordinate into a half hour of wonderment. It is best viewed from Lianhuashan Park. The park offers a clear view of the Civic Stage from about 600 meters.
Accessing the Civic Stage is easy. Take Metro Line 2, 4, or 8 to Civic Center Station. Alternatively, several buses stop at Civic Center Station or Civic Center West Station.
