Was Ciudad Vieja destined for misfortune? The second attempt to establish a capital city in Guatemala ended in disaster. Ciudad Vieja, nestled at the foot of the Volcán de Agua, seemed like a promising location. But on September 11, 1541, tragedy struck. A catastrophic lahar, a violent mudflow composed of volcanic debris and water, surged down the slopes of the volcano. The lahar engulfed Ciudad Vieja, leaving destruction in its wake. The city was devastated, and its inhabitants were forced to flee. Among the casualties was the city’s governor, Beatriz de la Cueva. Widowed just days earlier by the death of her conquistador husband, Pedro de Alvarado, Beatriz met a tragic end in the disaster. The ruins of Ciudad Vieja stand as a solemn reminder of the power of nature and the fleeting nature of human endeavors. The city’s destruction forced the Spanish colonists to relocate once again. This time, they chose a new site in the Panchoy Valley, which would eventually become the Antigua, Guatemala we know today.
