Imagine this wall standing tall for centuries. The City Wall in Hanover holds stories of protection and growth.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine Hanover as a small village on the Leine River. In the 13th century, it grew into a larger town. The City Wall became essential for defense.

In the 14th century, Hanover built its main churches. Construction also started on the City Wall. It featured three city gates. These gates controlled who entered and exited Hanover. Think about the bustling trade routes passing through these gates. Iron and silver from the Harz Mountains flowed into the city.

The City Wall helped Hanover grow in importance. Hanover was a gateway to major river valleys. The Rhine, Ruhr, and Saar were now easily accessible.

The first mention of Leinetor happened in 1340. Along with Aegidientor and Steintor, the city now has three guarded gates in the city wall. The Beguine Tower was built around 1357. It formed part of the city fortifications opposite Lauenrode Castle.

In 1490, Duke Heinrich the Elder attacked Hanover. He wanted to conquer “his city”. As early as 1486 he had the Döhren Tower burned down. He failed to breach the City Wall. This event gave rise to the saga of “Hanover’s Spartans”. It tells of the city’s heroic rescue.

The City Wall witnessed the Reformation in 1533. The Old Believer Council had to flee to Hildesheim. A new evangelical council took power. The population of the old town remained Protestant until the 19th century.

During the Thirty Years’ War in 1625, Danish troops occupied Hanover. They were Protestants. Tilly prepared for a siege for the Catholics. But the City Wall spared the people from the war. Tilly left without success. Hanover remained unharmed until the end of the war.

Today only fragments remain. The Hannover History Museum incorporates a section of the City Wall. This City Wall section was built in 1643. The museum integrates the last preserved medieval tower of Hanover.

The Döhren Tower, Horse Tower and Lister Tower were built starting in 1373. They became landmarks in the townscape that are still visible today. These towers were built as part of the expansion of the Landwehr.

The Shamrock appears as a sign on the coins. The city came into sole possession of the right to mint coins in 1438. Later you will find it on the city coat of arms.

The City Wall may be less visible now. But remember its vital role in Hanover’s past. It shaped the city’s trade, defense, and identity.

As we stand here let us appreciate the past. The City Wall helped Hanover become the city it is today. A city that values its history. A city that embraces the future.
