A skyscraper piercing the Essen sky. That’s the City Tower Essen. Built in 1963 it once bore different names. It was known as the Iduna-Hochhaus. Later it became the GFKL-Hochhaus.

The City Tower Essen wasn’t always so grand. It stands tall at 57 meters. It has 15 floors each with approximately 700 square meters of usable space. Originally designed for the Iduna insurance company it reflects a style unique to its time. Its sleek design is described as an icon of the young Federal Republic of Germany. Its slimness symbolizes weightlessness. It’s truly one-of-a-kind in Essen.

The building’s design echoes the Lever House in New York City. A similar style can also be seen in the Postbank-Hochhaus in Essen. This architectural style shows a clear influence of the International Style. Its glass curtain wall and steel-concrete frame are hallmarks of that style.

The City Tower Essen has had its share of ups and downs. In 2014 it stood empty. The previous owner was insolvent. The building was auctioned off for 8.2 million Euros. That’s quite a bit more than its estimated value. Experts found issues. There was PCB and asbestos contamination. The building also failed to meet modern fire safety standards.

A massive renovation followed. It cost about 30 million Euros. The old facade was removed and replaced entirely. A fitness studio opened in the 2600-square-meter base building in 2017. In 2017 the City Tower Essen reopened. This is a testament to the building’s resilience.

The City Tower Essen is now owned by Magna Immobilien AG. Since 2019 all of its office spaces are rented. The building stands as a symbol of Essen’s economic rebirth. It shows how past challenges can lead to modern success. Today the City Tower Essen is a vibrant hub of business and activity. It’s a landmark that blends history and modern innovation. It continues to shape the city’s skyline. It’s a testament to the spirit of Essen.
