The oak trees of City Park are some of the oldest and largest in the world. They are a sight to behold, standing tall and proud as living monuments to the city’s rich history. City Park, a vast expanse of green in the heart of New Orleans, is the 87th largest and 20th most visited urban park in the United States. It is larger than Central Park in New York City, making it a true urban oasis. The park is home to the largest collection of mature live oak trees in the world, some dating back to the 1700s. These magnificent trees have witnessed centuries of history, from duels to celebrations to Hurricane Katrina.

City Park was originally a plantation called Allard. You can imagine the original owners of the land riding through the park on horseback, their laughter echoing under the majestic oaks. In 1850, John McDonogh, a philanthropist, willed the land to the city, setting the stage for City Park’s transformation. In 1891, the City Park Improvement Association was founded, and the park was officially named “City Park.” It was officially established as a park in 1854.

The park was originally a favorite location for dueling. Gentlemanly contests of honor occurred beneath the park’s giant oaks. In 1805, a secretary to the governor was killed by a political opponent in a duel beneath the oaks. Fortunately, many duels ended without serious injury.

City Park has evolved over time, from a dueling ground to a popular venue for events. In the 1930s the park was expanded with federal funding as part of the Works Progress Administration. During the Great Depression, many people got back to work building roadways, fountains and even Tad Gormley Stadium. The park’s art is a reflection of these times. The park was flooded during Katrina, but locals, volunteers, and even international organizations stepped up to restore this vital piece of the city.

Today, City Park is a beloved destination for residents and visitors alike, offering everything from museums and gardens to amusement rides and festivals. Imagine strolling through the park’s vast green spaces, surrounded by the tranquil sound of birdsong and the ancient whisper of the oaks. The City Park is a place where time seems to slow down, and you can truly appreciate the beauty and resilience of New Orleans.
