Could a king truly move the heavens? Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur, certainly believed so. Here at the City Palace, his vision takes physical form. This isn’t just a palace. It is a testament to his ambition and a blend of Rajput, Mughal, and European styles. The City Palace, begun in 1729, became the new heart of his kingdom. He’d moved his court from Amber, seeking more space and water for his growing populace. Jai Singh II, a keen astronomer, entrusted the design of his city and the City Palace to Vidyadhar Bhattacharya. The palace, completed in 1732, became the centerpiece of a precisely planned city, aligned with the cardinal directions. The City Palace complex sprawls over one-seventh of the old city, a maze of courtyards, palaces, and gardens. Look closely at the Pitam Niwas Chowk. Four elaborate gates, each representing a season, guard this inner sanctum. The Peacock Gate, a riot of autumnal colors, honors Lord Vishnu. The Lotus Gate, a summery bloom, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati. The Green Gate, vibrant with the freshness of spring, is for Lord Ganesha. And the Rose Gate, delicate and wintry, honors Goddess Devi. Within the complex, the Chandra Mahal, a seven-story marvel, still houses the royal family. Peer beyond the cordoned-off areas, and imagine the lives lived within those walls. The Mubarak Mahal, a stunning example of Indo-Saracenic architecture, now houses a textile museum, showcasing the rich fabrics of Rajasthan. The City Palace also holds an armory, a chilling display of weaponry from a bygone era. Here, you can see the very clothes worn by Sawai Madho Singh I, preserved in the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum. As you wander through the City Palace, remember Jai Singh II, the king who sought to grasp the stars. His legacy lives on, not just in the stones of this palace, but in the vibrant city that surrounds it.
