Amidst the Frankfurt skyline, City Haus I stands tall. It has witnessed a fascinating history. City Haus I isn’t just steel and glass. It’s a story of resilience, innovation, and a touch of controversy. Completed in 1974, City Haus I, once known as Selmi-Hochhaus, quickly became a prominent landmark. The architects, Johannes Krahn and Richard Heil, designed this 42-story skyscraper to make a statement. And it did, even before its official opening. In 1973, a dramatic fire engulfed the upper floors of City Haus I. The blaze, visible across Frankfurt, became a spectacle. It even inspired satirical songs from students. Though initially suspected as arson, the fire was likely caused by faulty welding equipment. This event spurred advancements in fire safety regulations in Germany. The fire also inadvertently launched the career of fire chief Ernst Achilles. City Haus I rose from the ashes, becoming the tallest building in Frankfurt until 1976. Later, DG Bank, now DZ Bank, acquired City Haus I. The bank established its headquarters there and further expanded its presence with the addition of City Haus II in 1985. In 2007, City Haus I underwent a significant renovation. Architect Christoph Mäckler led the project. This renovation included a new facade, giving the building a brighter, modern look. This refurbishment also improved the building’s energy efficiency by a substantial 35%. Today, City Haus I remains a vital part of Frankfurt’s financial district and a testament to its ability to overcome challenges. It stands as a symbol of architectural ingenuity and a reminder of the city’s ever-evolving skyline.
