Has anyone ever told you about the time Charles Dickens graced the very stage we stand before? It’s true. Here at Glasgow’s City Halls & Old Fruitmarket, echoes of history intertwine with the vibrant pulse of today’s music scene. The City Halls & Old Fruitmarket, a captivating blend of old and new, stands as a testament to Glasgow’s enduring love for music and entertainment. Opened in 1841, City Halls & Old Fruitmarket was purpose-built for large gatherings and concerts. It became the city’s first true performance space. Over the years, this iconic venue has welcomed a diverse array of figures. From political giants like Benjamin Disraeli and William Gladstone to the literary genius of Charles Dickens. Even the fiery Hungarian patriot Lajos Kossuth graced this stage. The Grand Hall, with its traditional “shoebox” shape, cradles the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. They rehearse, record, and perform here, filling the space with their rich sounds. The Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Scottish Ensemble also regularly grace the stage. Imagine the soaring melodies of Louis-Antoine Jullien’s orchestra and Charles Halle’s ensemble reverberating through the hall in the 19th century. From 1874, Glasgow’s first regular orchestral subscription concerts took place within these very walls, led by the Glasgow Choral Union. Arthur Sullivan himself conducted here for two seasons. Just next door, the Old Fruitmarket adds another layer to this vibrant tapestry. Originally a bustling marketplace, it now hosts jazz and folk music events. It’s a space where the BBC SSO can push boundaries with experimental contemporary music. Can you almost smell the fresh fruit and flowers that once filled this air, hear the lively chatter of market-goers mingling with the strains of distant music? The building, a Category A listed structure since 1970, underwent a significant renovation in 2006. It emerged as a revitalized hub, home to not only the BBC SSO but also the Scottish Music Centre and extensive music education facilities. The City Halls & Old Fruitmarket stands as a dynamic testament to the power of music and community, a place where history whispers and melodies soar.
