Ever wondered what inspired the design of Port Moresby’s CITY HALL?

Today we are standing in front of the CITY HALL in Port Moresby. This is not just any office complex. It is the New City Hall for the National Capital District Commission.

The new CITY HALL in Port Moresby is a five-level contemporary office complex. It reflects the cultural heart of the region. The design was created by ProDesigners Architects. They worked with Terence Karo Architects of PNG.

The architects drew inspiration from unique cultural features. The headdress of Hiri queens was one influence. Also, they were inspired by Lagatoi. Lagatoi are famous features of the Central Province people. Port Moresby is located in this province.

Construction of the CITY HALL had a budget of K55.0 million. It was under construction as of 2023.

Port Moresby has a rich history. Before Europeans arrived, the Motu and Koitabu people lived here. They were fishermen and yam farmers. They traded with other settlements.

Captain John Moresby explored the harbour in 1873. He named two sections Fairfax and Moresby. He named them after his father, Admiral Sir Fairfax Moresby. The area became known as Port Moresby.

In 1883 and 1884, the British annexed the area. Port Moresby became a main Allied base during World War II. It was also a primary Japanese objective.

After 1945, Port Moresby grew. It changed from a drab port into a well-planned city. It gained modern amenities. In 1974, the National Capital District was established. It is coterminous with the city.

Papua New Guinea became independent in 1975. Port Moresby became its capital. The city has the highest population density in the country.

Since independence, Port Moresby has grown significantly. It has become a major hub for commerce and industry. The city preserves its rich cultural heritage. It remains a vibrant centre for Papua New Guinean art, music, and culture.

The CITY HALL stands as a symbol of Port Moresby’s progress. It also represents its commitment to preserving its cultural identity. It blends modern design with traditional inspiration.
