Imagine volunteers in blue berets and red jackets. These are the City Angels. Founded in Milan in 1994 by Mario Furlan, they are street volunteers. Furlan was a journalist and university professor. He wanted to create a multiethnic, gay-friendly and anti-racist group.
The City Angels help citizens and the homeless. They assist those who are marginalized. This includes immigrants, drug addicts, and the elderly. They cooperate with law enforcement to prevent street crime. In Milan, they run Casa Silvana. This is a 24-hour home for families and homeless animals. They also operate shelters for men plus women and families. The City Angels often work near railway stations. They also patrol public transport to improve security.
These volunteers range from 18 to 45 years old. Over half are women and over 20% are immigrants. City Angels do not carry weapons. Their uniform includes black sneakers or boots. This protects them from broken glass and syringes. They wear black trousers with pockets for equipment. The red shirt or jacket signifies emergency. The blue beret is a symbol of peace. Since 2009, the City Angels’ uniform has been displayed in Milan’s Museo del Risorgimento.
The City Angels emblem is an eagle protecting a city skyline. The eagle represents courage and foresight. Below the emblem is their mission: Solidarity and Security. The volunteers undergo a two-month training course. They learn first aid and self-defense. The self-defense technique is called Wilding. Mario Furlan created Wilding based on psychology and instinct.
The City Angels organize public initiatives. These promote tolerance and anti-racism. They host a multi-religious prayer before Christmas and Easter. Representatives from different religions pray together. This takes place in front of the Shoah Memorial with the homeless. They also hold Angel Day at Milan’s main soup kitchen. Leaders and celebrities serve meals to the homeless.
The City Angels have received several awards. These include the Ambrogino d’Oro from the City of Milan. In 2008, it was awarded to Eddie Gardner. He was a Ghanaian man who was stabbed in a racist attack. He tried to stop young people from taking drugs. Pope Benedict XVI called the City Angels scouts of the 21st century.
