Senator Fiévet a sugar magnate from Masny and Sin-le-Noble. His name echoes through the history of Lille. He wasn’t just a businessman. He was a powerful force in regional politics. His family’s story is interwoven with the economic and political fabric of Lille.

The Fiévet family’s influence extended far beyond sugar refining. Edouard and his brother Constant ran a large farm in Masny. It was a model farm known for its agricultural innovations. They pioneered sugar beet cultivation in 1831. Their success transformed Masny. The church the presbytery the town hall and schools all benefited from their generosity. This paternalistic approach cultivated loyalty among their employees. A sugar refinery in Sin-le-Noble completed their production chain.

Their political involvement began in 1844. A proposed law threatened local sugar producers. Edouard Fiévet led a powerful lobby. He successfully united families like the Brabant and Dervaux families. Together they blocked the bill. Soon the Fiévet brothers were involved in parliamentary inquiries. They offered their expertise and advice. Their influence spread. One of Republican Girard’s uncles was a sugar manufacturer in La Cappelle. Republican Louis Legrand’s niece married Maurice Tailliandier. Maurice was the son of Henry Tailliandier a deputy who represented agricultural and sugar interests.

In the 1885 senatorial elections Le Petit Nord a Republican newspaper attacked Fiévet. They accused him of buying German beet seeds. While these seeds offered higher yields they competed with French production. The newspaper also admitted that Fiévet and Macarez had to address protectionism to win. This was a crucial issue for their voters. The 1885 elections were a defeat for Republicans who failed to understand the concerns of the agricultural community. The sugar industry lobby tried to get Dervaux elected in 1886. Dervaux was a sugar manufacturer from Condé-sur-l’Escaut. He was presented as the candidate of beet growers and Belgian coal mines. He was accused of hiring Belgian workers and importing significant amounts of Belgian sugar beets.

The Fiévet family perfectly illustrates the merging of agricultural and sugar interests. Their impact on Lille’s economy and politics is undeniable. Their story is a testament to the enduring influence of industry and family in shaping a region. The legacy of Senator Fiévet remains a significant part of Lille’s narrative.
