Duke Emmanuel-Philibert, determined to protect his lands, commissioned the construction of this mighty fortress in 1554. The Italian engineer Gian Maria Olgiatti designed the citadel, incorporating innovative defensive strategies of the time. The Citadelle Saint-Elme boasts a unique trapezoidal design, its corners fortified by robust bastions facing the sea. A wide moat encircles the entire structure, crossed by a single bridge leading to the entrance gate. The Citadelle Saint-Elme wasn’t a standalone defense.
