A colossal marble hand. That’s what first captivated me about Amman Citadel. This isn’t just any hill. It’s a hill steeped in history a living testament to millennia of civilizations.

Amman Citadel stands proudly overlooking the modern city. This archeological site is located in downtown Amman. It is one of the seven hills that once formed the ancient city. The Citadel’s L-shaped profile is striking.

The Amman Citadel’s story begins long before recorded history. Evidence suggests inhabitance since the Neolithic period. The hill was fortified during the Bronze Age around 1800 BCE. Later it became the capital of the Kingdom of Ammon after 1200 BCE. Imagine the Ammonites their lives their culture thriving on this very spot. Then came the Neo-Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian empires followed by the Ptolemies and the Seleucids. Each left its mark its architecture its beliefs imprinted on this ancient hill.

The Roman period left a considerable legacy. The Temple of Hercules a magnificent structure is still visible today. Only a few parts remain but among them is that captivating hand. That colossal hand part of a giant statue of Hercules. This alone warrants a visit. The two remaining pillars are 30 feet high. The inscription dates it to around 160 CE. The Romans weren’t the last. The Byzantines arrived leaving behind the remains of a 6th-century church. Then the Umayyads added their layer of history constructing their impressive palace.

The Umayyad Palace. A marvel of engineering. Imagine the intricate mosaics the grand halls. The palace shows Byzantine influences. The entrance hall is shaped like a Greek cross. It possibly stands on top of an even older Byzantine structure. The palace complex included a massive water cistern. It cleverly provided water to the whole palace.

After the Umayyads a period of decline followed. The Citadel was largely abandoned until 1878. Bedouins and farmers used it sporadically. Despite this long period of neglect the Amman Citadel remains one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited places.

Archaeologists have been excavating the site since the 1920s. Italian British French Spanish and Jordanian teams have contributed to the ongoing discoveries. Yet much of the Citadel’s secrets remain buried. The Jordan Archaeological Museum is here too. It houses artifacts from the Citadel and other Jordanian sites.

Today as you stand before Amman Citadel you stand on layers of history. Every stone every ruin tells a silent story. Take a moment to imagine the bustling markets the powerful rulers the everyday lives of those who once walked these grounds. The Citadel’s story is far from over. It continues to be uncovered revealed to the world one fascinating discovery at a time.
