Did the Cippo di Niguarda always stand here guarding this busy intersection? Of course not. This old boundary stone, a silent sentinel from a bygone era, once stood on the edge of a dirt road. It marked the distance to Niguarda, a mere 0.900 kilometers away, with an almost charming precision compared to today’s sometimes confusing road signs. Imagine the Cippo di Niguarda back then, against a backdrop of open fields, marking the way for weary travelers. But progress, as they say, waits for no stone. In the winter of 2003-2004, during the redevelopment of this very intersection, the Cippo di Niguarda vanished! Niguardesi were distraught. Rumors flew faster than cars on a highway. Where had it gone? But like a phoenix from the asphalt, the Cippo di Niguarda reappeared in June 2004. Promoted from roadside attraction to roundabout royalty, it now stands proudly in the center of this traffic island. And that’s not all. A previously hidden inscription was revealed, pointing the way to Brusuglio, 2.500 kilometers away. The Cippo di Niguarda, once a simple marker of distance, now stands as a symbol of Niguarda’s history, a testament to the enduring nature of even the humblest landmarks.
