Is it true that this place hosts heroes from multiple wars? Welcome to Cimitirul Eternitatea. This is a place of remembrance in Galati. It holds stories of sacrifice and dedication. Cimitirul Eternitatea was established in 1865. It followed a law stating cemeteries must be away from churches and cities. Mihail Kogalniceanu’s government issued this law. The cemetery covers 22 hectares. It was divided into plots for different religions. Orthodox, Catholic, and Jewish faiths have their spaces. There were even plots for Muslims and suicides.

In 1913, the graveyard church was consecrated. It was dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Notable people are buried near the church. Their graves stand out artistically and historically.

Cimitirul Eternitatea also honors heroes. Monuments commemorate those who fell in World War I and II. They also remember those who died in the Romanian Revolution of 1989. The Heroes Mausoleum is the most imposing monument. Other memorials honor Romanian, French, German, and Soviet heroes.

The Heroes Mausoleum honors Romanian heroes. They fell in the Romanian War of Independence and both World Wars. Mihail Popescu, Galati City Hall’s chief architect, designed it. It was built between 1925 and 1927.

The World War II Heroes Memorial was designed by Gheorghe Terescenco. It is a rectangular column made of reinforced concrete. Marble covers it. A stone eagle sits atop the column. It holds a cross in its beak. The monument was inaugurated in 1997.

A white marble obelisk commemorates the heroes of the 1989 Revolution. Architect Aurel Pop designed it. It reads Honor to our heroes. It stands near the French heroes’ graveyard.

The French Heroes Graveyard contains the remains of French and Algerian soldiers. These soldiers were part of the Berthelot mission. Swords in the shape of a cross guard the French graves. Arabic inscriptions adorn the Algerian heroes’ monuments.

The German War heroes’ memorial features a granite cross. It includes the words Remember them and the victims of all wars. Their fate compels us to understanding. The Soviet Heroes Memorial is shaped like an obelisk. It reads Eternal glory to the soldiers of the Soviet army. They gave their lives in the fight for the liberation of humanity from fascist slavery.

Many public figures are buried at Cimitirul Eternitatea. Charles Cunningham was a British consul. Vincenzzo Fanciotti contributed to the construction of a commercial school. Gheorghe Fulger was a mayor of Galati. Aristide Papadopol was known for his love of art. Ioan D Prodrom was a philanthropist and politician. Nicolae Mantu was a Romanian painter.

Cimitirul Eternitatea is managed by the City Hall of Galati. It is a religious and military cemetery. There are over 26000 graves within its 213000 square meters. Cimitirul Eternitatea remains a poignant reminder of the past. It connects us to the people and events that shaped Galati and Romania. It serves as a place of respect, remembrance and reflection.
