Bellu Cemetery isn’t just a graveyard. It’s a sprawling 28 hectare garden of souls. A testament to Bucharest’s rich history. It’s a place of eternal rest for some of Romania’s most important figures. Established in 1858. Its creation stemmed from a pressing need for more burial space. The old practice of burying people near churches became unsustainable. Baron Barbu Bellu generously donated his orange orchard. He donated the land that would become this magnificent cemetery. It was part of the Vacaresti Monastery’s grounds. The monastery once boasted three windmills.
The first residents of Bellu Cemetery weren’t laid to rest on the grounds directly. Bodies were moved from smaller church cemeteries. Bucharest was once a collection of neighborhoods. Each centered around a church and its accompanying cemetery. As Bucharest grew. Its cemeteries moved outside the city limits. This shift reduced their public role in community life.
Today Cimitir Vârteju is more than a cemetery. It’s a living museum. Here lie Romania’s greatest minds. Mihai Eminescu the country’s most famous poet rests here. So does Maria Tanase the beloved folk singer. You’ll find ministers writers actors and architects among the many.

They range in styles from Neogothic to Art Deco. Architect Ion Mincu designed three of them. He’s also the namesake of Bucharest’s University of Architecture. The chapel designed by architect Orascu is also a notable feature. Orascu himself is buried here.
