Extended opening hours: How does that make you feel when you are standing in front of a cemetery? The Cimitero di Cerro Maggiore invites reflection on life and remembrance. It is a place where the past whispers to the present.
The Cimitero di Cerro Maggiore is more than just a burial ground. It is a space for communal memory. It serves as a reminder of those who came before us.
In late October and early November 2020 the Cimitero di Cerro Maggiore extended its opening hours. From October 29 to November 2 the cemeteries in Cerro Maggiore and Cantalupo stayed open from 8 AM to 8 PM. This decision aimed to prevent crowding during All Saints’ Day and the Commemoration of the Dead.
Mayor Nuccia Berra stated that the extended hours allowed for a more spread-out visitation. She urged visitors to maintain social distancing and wear masks. A similar decision was made in Legnano. Their cemeteries also had extended hours to manage visitor flow.
Outside the Cimitero di Cerro Maggiore stands Viale della Rimembranza. This avenue serves as a memorial to those lost in war. Paved with porphyry it features rows of young cypress trees. These trees separate the main avenue from two side paths.
About halfway down another road intersects the avenue. This road leads to a parking area on one side. On the other side it leads to a green space known as Via Berchet.
The second central portion of the avenue holds 143 commemorative plaques. These plaques are set within the curb that lines the avenue. Inside the Cimitero di Cerro Maggiore on the left is a chapel. Inside this chapel is a memorial to those who died in the two World Wars.
Another commemorative element exists in Piazza Concordia. This is at the entrance to the center of Cerro Maggiore. It is in a pedestrian area paved and surrounded by gardens. Large cedar trees surround a sculptural monument. It stands opposite the historic Ente Morale Asilo Infantile schools.
The Viale delle Rimembranze is dedicated to the fallen of the First and Second World Wars. The Soprintendenza Archeologia oversees its preservation. They are responsible for the city of Milan.
As you stand here remember the stories. Remember the lives and sacrifices that shaped our world. The Cimitero di Cerro Maggiore serves as a peaceful place for reflection. It connects us to the past and to each other.
