In May 1915, amidst the turmoil of World War I, the Cimetière militaire allemand de Wavrin was established. This German war cemetery, located in Wavrin, Nord, France, serves as the final resting place for soldiers who perished in the First World War. The cemetery is situated north of Wavrin town, just across from the communal cemetery, along the Chemin du Bois de la Rive. Initially intended for soldiers fallen during the First Battle of Artois (May 9th to June 25th, 1915), the Cimetière militaire allemand de Wavrin later became the burial ground for more soldiers who died in 1917. Following the armistice, the remains of German soldiers from temporary cemeteries in the surrounding areas were also brought here. Between the wars, the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge undertook initial work on the cemetery grounds, including planting trees. After the Franco-German agreement on war graves of July 19th, 1966, the Volksbund replaced the original wooden crosses with granite crosses in 1970. The granite, sourced from Belgium, is etched with the names and dates of the fallen. Within this square-shaped cemetery, measuring 100 meters on each side, lie the remains of 975 German soldiers. The Cimetière militaire allemand de Wavrin stands as a solemn reminder of the devastating impact of war and offers a place for quiet reflection on the lives lost.
