In May 1915, amidst the chaos of the battles of Aubers and Festubert, a somber task began behind the church of Beaucamps-Ligny. German medical units of the VII Armee Korps started establishing what would become the Cimetière militaire allemand de Beaucamps-Ligny. This German military cemetery, a silent testament to the Great War’s devastation, would continue to receive the fallen until the village’s liberation in October 1918. The Cimetière militaire allemand de Beaucamps-Ligny occupies over 11,000 square meters. Within its peaceful confines lie 2,628 German soldiers. These men met their fate on the brutal battlefields of Armentières/Bois-Grenier and La Bassée. Many perished at the Feldlazarett, a field hospital established within the walls of the Pensionnat Ste Marie. This building, which stands opposite the cemetery entrance, is now a lycee. Other soldiers buried at the Cimetière militaire allemand de Beaucamps-Ligny were brought here from surrounding areas, their final resting place consolidated within this hallowed ground. The cemetery stands as a poignant reminder of the human cost of conflict. It offers a space for reflection and remembrance, where visitors can honor the lives lost during this tumultuous period in history.
