What if these weathered stones could talk? They would whisper tales from centuries past right here at Cimetière du Quennaumont. This is no ordinary burial ground. It is a sprawling outdoor museum. It holds the stories of Lille’s most influential figures.
Cimetière du Quennaumont, also known as the Eastern Cemetery, was established in 1779. It has grown over the centuries to encompass 22 hectares. That is about 54 acres. Within its grounds lie approximately 36000 graves.
The Cimetière du Quennaumont is more than just a final resting place. It is a testament to Lille’s rich history. The Coustenoble-Dujardin family owned some of the land. They wished their former park to retain its landscaped character. Their family vault is one of the oldest. It reportedly holds up to 150 people.
As you walk through Cimetière du Quennaumont, notice the diversity. While primarily Catholic, it contains Jewish and Muslim sections. You will also find Chinese, Japanese and Turkish graves. Masonic symbols adorn some tombs. Look for the square and compass.
The city of Lille maintains Cimetière du Quennaumont. Private landscaping companies also help. The cemetery is a haven for local wildlife. Squirrels, wild cats, and various birds thrive here. You can also see many plants. There are ornamental flowers and wild flora too. Edible plants like persimmon, walnut and linden trees grow here. A pond supports insects. There are even beehives on the restroom roofs near the Porte du Ballon entrance.
The Cimetière du Quennaumont offers three entrances. The Porte du Ballon is at the end of Rue du Ballon. Another entrance is the Porte de Muy. It is located at the end of Avenue de Muy. The third entrance is on Rue des Vicaires.
Many famous people are buried at Cimetière du Quennaumont. Pierre Mauroy, a former Prime Minister and mayor of Lille rests here. Roger Salengro, another mayor of Lille, is also buried here. The cemetery also holds artists. They include painter Alfred Agache and sculptor Albert Darcq. General Louis Faidherbe rests here. He was an administrator of Senegal.
