Stone whispers tell tales. Here at the Cimetière d’Houplin, history rests beneath our feet. This is not just a burial ground. It is a chronicle etched in stone.

The Cimetière d’Houplin is located on Rue du Cimetière in Houplin-Ancoisne. Houplin-Ancoisne lies in the Nord department of France. The GPS coordinates pinpoint its location at 50.5721 latitude and 2.9941 longitude.

Within the Cimetière d’Houplin, there are 630 photographed tombs. These monuments capture the stories of those who came before us. Geneanet has documented these memorials, preserving their memory.

Consider Allée D. Here, 69 tombs stand in silent formation. Allées A and B hold 61 tombs. Allée C has 17. Allée C1 contains 40. Allée E shelters 52. Allée F is the resting place for 70. Allée G is the silent home of 72. Allée H marks 70 final destinations. Allée I contains 66. Allée J holds 46. Allée K contains 27. The Allée du fond marks 9 graves. Imagine the lives represented here. Each tombstone marks a life. Each epitaph whispers a story. Families mourn. Communities remember. The Cimetière d’Houplin is more than stone and earth. It is a tapestry of lives woven together.

The project “Sauvons nos tombes” encourages us to preserve this heritage. We can contribute by photographing tombs and burial sites. This simple act helps protect our shared history. Geneanet makes it easy to participate.

Houplin itself has ancient roots. The name “Houplin” may mean “on the water.” Early settlements likely formed near the Deûle River or its bordering marshes. Archaeological finds suggest Houplin-Ancoisne is rich in prehistoric artifacts. Neolithic remains are especially common. Excavations often precede public or private developments. Evidence of lake villages, Gallo-Roman relics, and medieval remnants has been discovered.

The Église Saint-Martin in Houplin reflects this rich past. Classified as a historical monument, it dates to the Middle Ages. A beam once mentioned the year 1412. This was the birth year of Joan of Arc. The church’s Romanesque style features a distinctive bell tower. A rectangular block rises, topped by a triple crown of abat-sons supporting an arcaded gallery. A spire dominates the structure.

Ancoisne also has its church, Église Notre Dame de Lourdes. More recent, it dates to 1901. This church is more monumental in its Gothic style.

In 2004, “Mosaïc, le Jardin des Cultures” was added. It is a jewel of the Parc de la Deûle and the Espace Naturel Métropolitain. It was inaugurated as part of “LILLE, European Capital of Culture.”

Houplin-Ancoisne maintains a verdant environment. It is calm and peaceful, away from city pollution. Yet, it is only 10 km from Lille. Hiking trails and circuits offer pleasant walking and horseback riding. Cyclists will also find enjoyment here.

As we stand in the Cimetière d’Houplin, remember these stories. Honor those who rest here. Reflect on the passage of time. This place is a connection to our past and a reminder of our shared humanity.
