Right before you stands the Bab Mahrouk Cemetery. A significant burial ground within Fes el Bali’s ancient walls. It’s nestled just outside the Bab Mahrouk gate. This gate itself has a dramatic story. Originally called Bab ash-Sharia meaning “Gate of Justice” it gained its current name after a rebel was burned there in 1203-04. For centuries the heads of executed rebels were displayed there a chilling testament to the gate’s grim past. The practice continued into the early 20th century. Some condemned men were even hung by their wrists just above the ground for a day before execution.

But the cemetery holds a gentler story too. Here lies Abu Bakr ibn al-Arabi a 12th-century Islamic scholar. His mausoleum is a focal point of the cemetery. Nearby rests Ibn al-Khatib a renowned Andalusi poet from Granada. His life was a whirlwind of poetry politics and ultimately a tragic end in a Fes jail in 1375.

Intriguingly legend whispers that Muhammad XII the last ruler of Granada and al-Andalus may also rest here. His final resting place is unconfirmed. Experts are still researching this intriguing possibility. It adds another layer of mystery to this already fascinating place.

The Bab Mahrouk Cemetery is more than just a burial ground. It’s a historical timeline etched in stone. A place where whispers of rebellion and scholarship poetry and power intertwine.
