Imagine coordinating the efforts of a global church from a single building. That’s the daily reality inside the Church Office Building. This 28-story structure is a central hub for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It supports the church’s lay ministry worldwide.

Completed in 1972 the Church Office Building wasn’t officially dedicated until July 24 1975. The building was partially in use three years before its dedication. It cost $31 million to construct. George Cannon Young was the architect behind this impressive building.

For years it held the title of Salt Lake City’s tallest building. From 1973 to 1998 it stood as the state’s tallest structure. It reaches 420 feet at roof level. An antenna spire extends the height to 435 feet. Now, it is the second-tallest building in Salt Lake City.

Inside the Church Office Building administrative staff manage various church operations. These include communications welfare humanitarian work and family history. They also handle genealogy missionary efforts and church publications. The building facilitates the creation of print video and online content.

Originally the Genealogical Society was housed here. In 1985 it moved to a different building across the street. The Church Office Building has a main tower with 28 floors. It also features east and west wings each with four floors.

The building’s design includes unique architectural details. The first four floors expand outward to form wings. These wings have stone facades with relief maps of the hemispheres. The tower features quartzite columns flanking the windows. This creates a pinstripe pattern. Some say it resembles the former World Trade Center.

Inside the lobby features a massive mural of the Great Commission. There is also a statue honoring Mormon pioneer sacrifices. The inscription reminds us of their struggles and faith.

Once, an observation deck on the 26th floor was open to the public. It offered views of the surrounding landscape. Visitors could see Antelope Island the Great Salt Lake and the Wasatch Mountains. The gardens surrounding the building were also a popular attraction. These gardens were redesigned every six months with exotic plants.

The Church Office Building played a role in the 2002 Winter Olympics. During the games, the west side displayed a large image of a female figure skater.

The Church Office Building is more than just an office space. It symbolizes the Church’s global reach and administrative capabilities. Its location within Temple Square places it at the heart of Mormon history and culture. The building consolidates departments and provides essential services to the Church. It reflects the Church’s evolution and its commitment to spreading its message worldwide.
