Whispers of a barn. That’s where the story of the Church of the Transfiguration in Houston begins. Not in a grand cathedral or a stately chapel but a humble barn. This isn’t just any church. The Church of the Transfiguration holds a unique history. Its roots are far from ordinary.

The Church of the Transfiguration started in 1983. Father Jerry Appelby a diocesan pastor spearheaded the project. The diocese wanted a new parish in the Southeast quadrant of Monroe County. Father Jerry readily accepted the challenge. The announcement came in May 1983. But there was one small problem. No building. A search through Pittsford yielded nothing. Then a parishioner Tom Kirchoff found an old barn.

Imagine the first Mass on August 6 1983. The Feast of the Transfiguration. It was held in that barn. A joyous occasion filled with hope and excitement. Winter brought new challenges. The barn was far from ideal. Holes in the walls sheep inside. Parishioners bundled up in coats hats and gloves. Father Jerry celebrated Mass in his winter coat. Removing his gloves only to raise the chalice. This was their Christmas Eve Mass. A testament to their faith.

A permanent location was later secured on West Bloomfield Road. The first Church of the Transfiguration was built. It is now the Education Center. The Christmas Mass of 1984 was held there. The church was dedicated on May 5 1985. Growth continued. A new larger church was needed. Parishioners had two requests for the interior. Bright and close to the presider. The result was a beautiful church. With windows flooding the space with light. The altar was just a step away. The floor sloped gently allowing everyone to be near the presider.

Ashes rest within the altar table. A touching tribute to Bishop Larry Casey and Sister Maria Goretti. Representing the important role of women. The new church was dedicated on December 19 1992. Bishop Matthew Clark Father Jerry parishioners and well-wishers celebrated together. The Church of the Transfiguration had found a home. A home that reflects the faith and determination of its community. A home built on a foundation of humble beginnings and unwavering faith. A barn a theatre temporary space then a permanent home. The journey continues. But the story of the Church of the Transfiguration stands as a testament to resilience faith and the power of community.
