In 1959, a small seed of faith was planted in Chennai, a seed that would blossom into the Church of the Risen Redeemer. This church, nestled in Kodambakkam, began not within grand walls, but in a humble car shed on Central Avenue Road. The first service saw just seventeen souls, their combined offering a mere eleven rupees. The Church of the Risen Redeemer’s journey started with shared dreams and donated music, provided by Mr. D.L.D. Earnest on his own organ. Initially, services bounced between locations. From a car shed to the Modern High School campus, the fledgling congregation searched for a permanent home. Through the dedication of members like Miss. Padma Isaac and Dr. Miss. C. Moses, this home began to materialize. In 1960, the land where the Church of the Risen Redeemer now stands was purchased. The foundation stone, a symbol of hope and permanence, was laid by Mr. Koilpillai. The church building itself began to take shape based on structural drawings prepared by Mrs. Sheela Tribe, an architect from Madras University, in 1963. Finally, on October 25, 1963, the Church of the Risen Redeemer was officially christened and dedicated by Bishop Rev. David Chellappa, the man who even suggested the church’s evocative name. From its humble beginnings, the Church of the Risen Redeemer has flourished. It now embraces over 500 families. Nearly 1000 members gather each Sunday to worship, a testament to the enduring power of faith and the dedication of those early pioneers. The Church of the Risen Redeemer isn’t just a place of worship; it’s a living testament to the power of small beginnings. It is a story of community, perseverance, and unwavering faith.
