A beacon of hope. That’s what the Church of the Redeemer has been for the Point Breeze community since 1966. Reverend Joseph T. Kirkland and nine others envisioned a place of worship and community upliftment. Right here at the corner of 24th and Dickinson Street, they established the Church of the Redeemer. For 53 years, Reverend Kirkland guided his flock, shaping the church into a vital resource that addressed not only spiritual needs but also moral, educational, social, economic, and even political ones.

The Church of the Redeemer wasn’t just a Sunday sanctuary. It was a hub of activity. The church has run summer programs for local youth. It has renovated homes for families in need. It even established the Redeemer Federal Credit Union to provide financial assistance to members. Over 45 ministries flourished within its walls, a testament to the church’s commitment to “Good News” and missionary work. This dedication led thousands to find faith. The congregation grew from a modest 177 members to over 1,950, demonstrating the impact of Reverend Kirkland’s vision. His leadership continued until his passing in 1982.

The Church of the Redeemer’s physical presence also expanded. The congregation built and paid off the $2.5 million mortgage for the Redeemer Christian Life & Education Center. This building serves both the church and the community as an educational institution and activity center. The church also acquired an entire city block, from 2500 Dickinson to 2500 Reed Streets. This land lays the foundation for future growth. In 2006, the church further cemented its commitment to education with the establishment of the Redeemer Institute for Christian Education (R.I.C.E.). R.I.C.E. is an ETA-certified biblical institution, offering a structured approach to religious studies.

The Church of the Redeemer has also been a catalyst for community partnerships. It collaborated with the Nationalities Services Center, the PA Horticultural Society, and the Point Breeze community to create raised garden beds on the church’s property. This innovative project provided access to healthy, locally grown vegetables. The church hasn’t neglected the digital age either. It has made significant advancements in its media ministries and social media presence. These efforts extend the reach of the church’s message far beyond Philadelphia. The Church of the Redeemer’s journey has been one of growth, service, and a deep-rooted commitment to community. It stands as a symbol of faith and resilience.
