Thy hand in mine this ring doth bind my heart to thine. These words are inscribed on the Ring of Aldyth. It stands in the forecourt of the Church of the Recessional. This romantic ring carries an Old Saxon legend. The legend speaks of happiness and devotion. It promises this to a couple. They must clasp their right hands through the ring. Then they must repeat the inscribed vows together.
Welcome to the Church of the Recessional at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale. This church offers a serene escape. It is a place for reflection and romance. The Church of the Recessional is the third church built at Forest Lawn. Its architecture draws inspiration from the Church of St Margaret. St Margaret’s is located in Rottingdean Sussex England. It is an Anglo-Saxon-styled building. The edifice features stone and stained glass. It dates back to 1100 A.D. and still stands today.
The dedication of the Church of the Recessional occurred on November 30 1941. Inside the chancel, you will find three stained glass windows. These windows depict scenes of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. Charles J Connick crafted these stained glass windows. Along both sides of the chancel arch are faithful reproductions. These are of the pulpit and baptismal font of St Margaret’s. Over the arch, you will see words from Apostle Paul. They read Now abideth faith hope and love these three and the greatest of these is love.
Along the south side of the Church of the Recessional are more stained glass windows. These windows show the Beatitudes. The Beatitudes are from the Sermon on the Mount. The church’s design creates a peaceful atmosphere. Forest Lawn Memorial Park acquired Song of the Angels in 1940. It was meant for a chapel in the Church of the Recessional. Initially, a stained-glass window was planned. Instead, Forest Lawn chose the painting from Schnittjer’s gallery. Forest Lawn craftsmen built a large gothic-style frame for the painting. It remains in this wooden frame at the Forest Lawn Museum.
