Established in the autumn of 1920 the Church of the Nativity stands as a testament to faith. It’s a vibrant community. Bishop John J Cantwell of Monterey and Los Angeles founded this parish dedicated to the Nativity of our Blessed Lord. Father Edward J Riordan became its first pastor. The very first Holy Mass was celebrated on December 12 1920. It took place in a parishioner’s home. This was the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe a significant date in Catholic history.

Soon after land was purchased on the corner of 57th Street and Vermont Avenue. Construction of the church began. The Church of the Nativity quickly grew. Within two years its congregation had expanded significantly. To accommodate this growth additional land was bought. A parish school opened its doors in 1925. This ensured the community’s spiritual and educational needs were met.

Today the Church of the Nativity maintains a strong presence. It boasts approximately 350 registered families. Over 10 active ministries serve its members. The church caters to its diverse community. It offers daily bilingual Masses. There is one Sunday Mass in English. Three Spanish Sunday Masses are also held. This reflects the large Latino population that makes up much of the congregation. The Church of the Nativity continues to be a beacon of faith. It is a place of deep love for the Catholic faith. It shows deep appreciation for learning.
