Joan Martorell i Montells designed the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1904. His neo-Byzantine style incorporated Gothic and neo-Mudéjar features.
Tragedy struck during the Tragic Week of 1909. The church was set on fire. Joan Martorell’s son refurbished it.

Notice the un-repaired damage as a reminder of the past. Imagine the chaos and destruction. Think about the people who sought refuge here.
The adjacent school has historical significance. It holds remains of the new convent. Saint Anthony Mary Claret founded it in 1871. At that time, this area was the outskirts of Gràcia.
In 1972, the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary became a parish. The Claretian Missionaries took over. Currently, it forms a parish unit with St. Thomas Aquinas.
In 2023, the Heart of Mary Parish celebrated its 50th anniversary. Cardinal Archbishop of Barcelona Joan Josep Omella led the Eucharist. He thanked the Claretians for their service.
Cardinal Omella described the parish as an oasis. He said it was a place where everyone can meet. He used John XXIII’s simile of the Church. It is like a fountain where everyone can drink.
Fr. Shinto Tomàs recalled the eight Claretian rectors. They served the parish over the years. The Virolai was sung. Everyone entrusted themselves to the Heart of Mary.
The celebration continued with refreshments. Parishioners conversed with Cardinal Omella. They talked about various parish activities.
Take a moment to appreciate the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It is more than just a building. It is a symbol of faith, history and community. Its walls have witnessed tragedy and celebration. It continues to serve as a spiritual home for many.
