Why is this serene sanctuary we call the Church of the Immaculate Conception sometimes referred to as “The Cambodian Temple”? The Church of the Immaculate Conception, the oldest Catholic church in Thailand, whispers tales of resilience and faith. Imagine, in the 16th century, when Portuguese missionaries first arrived, their faith echoing amidst a predominantly Buddhist land. King Narai, a beacon of tolerance, granted them land in 1674 to build this very church. However, the Burmese invasion of Ayutthaya temporarily halted its construction. Years later, under the reign of King Rama I, the Portuguese returned, bringing with them Cambodian refugees seeking solace from civil war. These refugees, instrumental in rebuilding the church in 1785, led to it being fondly called “Bot Baan Khamen” – the Cambodian Village Church. But the story doesn’t end there. In the 19th century, Vietnamese refugees, fleeing religious persecution, found solace within the church’s embrace. They rebuilt it in 1832, earning it the moniker “Bot Ban Yuan” – the Vietnamese Village Church. This testament to Thailand’s enduring tolerance, the Church of the Immaculate Conception, stands as a symbol of unity, where faith transcended borders and echoed within its very walls.
