Gazing at the Church of the Holy Trinity, can you sense the echoes of Serena Rhinelander’s vision? This architectural gem, nestled on East 88th Street, wasn’t simply built. It was willed into existence by a confluence of desires and needs. The Church of the Holy Trinity stands as a testament to Rhinelander’s wish to memorialize her family. It’s a physical embodiment of the merger between the original Church of the Holy Trinity and St. James Church. And it fulfills the burgeoning needs of the St. James Mission on East 83rd Street. Rhinelander’s generosity was extraordinary. She donated not just the land, but also the funds for the design and construction of this entire complex. She originally intended to offer this gift to St. James Church on Madison Avenue. However, they lacked the resources for its upkeep. Fate intervened in the form of the original Church of the Holy Trinity, located downtown amidst the burgeoning commercial district. Seeking a new home, they sold their property and merged with St. James Church. The proceeds from this sale provided the necessary endowment for Rhinelander’s vision to take root. The complex itself is a marvel of French Gothic architecture. J. Stewart Barney designed a structure that blended English repose with French elegance. The church, consecrated in 1899, boasts a soaring bell tower, intricate stained glass windows, and an interior finished with dark brown terra cotta, a novel choice for the time. St. Christopher’s House, designed in the style of a French chateau, housed a clubhouse, kindergarten, swimming pool, and other amenities, serving the entire community regardless of faith. The Church of the Holy Trinity became more than just a place of worship. It evolved into a community hub, offering everything from coal cooperatives and day nurseries to sewing clubs and a bustling Sunday school. Originally a chapel of St. James, the Church of the Holy Trinity achieved independent parish status in 1951 under the leadership of Rev. James Paul. From its inception as a settlement church serving a growing immigrant population to its current role as a vital community center, the Church of the Holy Trinity continues to inspire and uplift.
