Is it a coincidence that the Church of the Guardian Angels, a beacon of modern architecture, stands as a testament to Dublin’s evolving urban landscape? The Church of the Guardian Angels, completed in 1967, reflects a time of rapid growth in Dublin. The Newtownpark area, like many suburbs, experienced a population boom that the existing parish, St John the Baptist, struggled to accommodate. This led to the division of the parish and the construction of the Church of the Guardian Angels. This new church, along with a primary school, was made possible by the generosity of the Daughters of Charity who donated the land. The church’s design, a striking contrast to the traditional architecture of St John the Baptist Church, is the brainchild of architect Charles Ellison. His vision incorporated a reinforced concrete frame, a departure from convention, and topped it with a distinctive copper roof. The Church of the Guardian Angels is notable for its sheer size. It even served as the venue for the St Joseph’s Young Priests Society’s Annual Mass for many years. Its spacious interior, bathed in natural light streaming through stained glass windows, creates a captivating play of colors, offering a serene experience for the soul. Interestingly, the Church of the Guardian Angels holds the unique distinction of being the only church in all of Ireland dedicated to the Guardian Angels.
