The Church of the Annunciation began its journey in 1870. Its first service was held on November 20th in a different location. It was then known as the Church of Our Merciful Saviour. The name changed in 1882. It reflected a dedication to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Its original home was at Twelfth and Diamond Streets. It was a Romanesque-style building. It featured a bell tower and a parish house. The building boasted free seating for 650. It had a large chancel for acolytes and choristers. The reredos was a beautiful work of art painted by Anita Sargent and Marianna Sloan.
The Church of the Annunciation embraced innovative practices. In 1888 incense became part of their services. Even more remarkably in 1896 it became one of the first Anglican churches worldwide to practice Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament and eucharistic exposition.
The Church of the Annunciation wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a vibrant hub. It housed numerous internal organizations. These included a Sunday school and guilds dedicated to various saints. Nuns from the Sisterhood of the Holy Nativity were actively involved. They worked as visitors educators and sacristans.
Tragedy struck on April 6 1990. A fire destroyed the beloved church building. Yet the spirit of the Church of the Annunciation remained unbroken. Its congregation found solace at St Clement’s Church. They worshipped there until 1991.
The Church of the Annunciation then found a new home. It’s located in Northwest Philadelphia near Mount Airy. Its current building once belonged to the Church of Epiphany. The Church of the Annunciation was consecrated in its new location in 1992.
Today the Church of the Annunciation continues its mission. It serves as a beacon of hope and faith.
