Picture this a magnificent Gothic Revival church nestled in Pasadena. This is the Church of the Angels a place steeped in history and beauty.
The Church of the Angels is one of Southern California’s oldest continuously operating churches. Its cornerstone was laid on Easter Eve April 20 1889. It was consecrated just months later on September 29 1889. Designed by Arthur Edmund Street and adapted by Ernest Albert Coxhead it’s modeled after St Mary’s Church in England. The Church of the Angels however is not an exact copy.
This remarkable church sits on three acres. Its sandstone exterior was quarried from the San Fernando Valley. The red stone incorporated into the structure came from the San Rafael Ranch. Inside the walls are red pressed brick and the ceiling is redwood.
A prominent feature is its 44-foot stone tower. This tower houses an eight-day Seth Thomas clock. The clock chimes the hours using a bell in the belfry. The stone sundial and its heart-shaped setting is a touching memorial to Frances Campbell-Johnston the parish’s founder. It was a gift from her sons.
The Church of the Angels served as the Bishop of Los Angeles’ pro-cathedral. This was until St Paul’s Church was established. On November 29 1889 it became the Bishop’s Chapel. Since then the Bishop of Los Angeles has served as rector.
The Church of the Angels has undergone three major repairs. The wooden parquet floor was replaced. The tower was shortened after the 1971 earthquake. For the centennial in 1989 the bell tower was rebuilt. The church was also strengthened and reinforced.
Inside you’ll find exquisite details. A magnificent memorial window depicts the discovery of Christ’s empty tomb. It was designed and executed by Cox & Buckley of London. The altar and chancel furniture are veneered with olive wood. This wood came from Mission San Gabriel. The carved pulpit is made of English oak. It stands on a white Portland stone base. It was erected for the church’s 40th anniversary. A baptismal font of Mexican alabaster stands in the baptistry. A child angel carved from Italian marble kneels at the base holding a cross. The workers who built the church gifted the font.
The Church of the Angels boasts a unique pipe organ. Built and installed in 1889 by Frank Roosevelt it is the oldest pipe organ in Southern California still in its original building. Its gentle smooth and lovely voicing enhances the church’s musical life.
The Church of the Angels is more than a building. It’s a living testament to faith community and architectural artistry. It stands as a beacon of history and a testament to the enduring spirit of Pasadena.
